Dirk Smit 1889-1985, Listed
This is a delightful floral by artist, Derk Smit. The subject being yellow roses. Painting has lush brush strokes, with slight impasto, coloring is excellent and bright, no cracklure or issues with canvas. Signed on lower right with "Derk Smit", but no date nor title. Painting was framed as pictured, but not sure if frame is original to the painting. Born in the Netherlands in 1889. Derk Smit came to the United States in 1914 arriving in Chicago. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and the Chicago Art Institute and served in WWI. After the war he opened an interior design company. Memberships included the Chicago Painters and Scupltors Association, the Brown County (Indiana) Art Gallery Association, and Indiana Artists Club fruequently displaying at the Hoosier Salon. He moved to Laguna Beach, California in the 1950's and continued to paint as well as becoming a founding member of the Laguna Hills Art Association.
